The natural healing power of lemon
LEMON belongs to the group of fruits known as the citrus fruits. They are so called because of their high content of citric acid. Other members of this group are orange, lime, grape fruit, tangerine, tangelo etc.
Together with their even higher content of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) these fruits are classified as acid fruits. Their acid is said to be healthy, organic and nutritious and so even though lemon is acidic, it produces an alkaline effect in the body as it neutralises the acidity.
Lemon is by far the most important member of this group because of the many diseases it is known to cure. It is for this reason we shall be looking at lemon as a representative of the citrus fruits.
The lemon tree is a small evergreen tree originally from Asia but is now found in most countries of Africa and beyond. It has a yellow elliptical fruit with a sour taste due to its citric acid content, which is about five per cent to six per cent. Lemon fruit has water content of 96 per cent, 1.8 grams of fiber and 40mgs of Vitamin C.
Other vitamins, minerals and nutrients found in lemon are Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E, calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, pectin and limonene with which it fights infection and promotes immunity.
The lemon fruit is effective against a wide variety of diseases because of all these contents and properties. It has powerful antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral effects against an equally wide range of bacteria, parasites in the intestines and viruses that may cause infection in different parts of the body.
Together with its immune boosting power, lemon can be used to fight such skin diseases as acne, eczema and nasal conditions like colds, running nose and sorethroat. Other topical uses of lemon include treatment for corn, calluses, insect bites and varicose veins because of its ability to strengthen the walls of the veins.
Furthermore, lemon, through its balm produces a calming effect in the body and acts as an antidepressant and a blood pressure regulating substance. It can clear anxiety, dizziness and exhaustion, in addition to combatting stress and other nervous disorders.
Also, lemon is known to promote sleep and it eliminates fatigue and energizes the body, just like a tonic. It also eliminates fever and chills and can be used as a remedy for pain due to its analgesic properties. In the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth down to the stomach, lemon plays significant roles. It refreshes the mouth and can be used as a remedy for halitosis. In the stomach, lemon acts as a digestive aid as it enhances stomach acid secretion.
There are a couple of effects of lemon against two other conditions in the body that I consider its, most important. These are the effect of lemon in weight loss and cancer prevention and treatment.
Lemon and the other citrus fruits by their acidic nature are powerful detoxifying fruits, which detoxify and cleanse the body of toxins. These are toxins, which are usually stored in the fat cells of the body. Indeed, the fat is produced by the body for the storage of toxins and acid.
As lemon neutralises these toxins and acids, the fat begin to melt away and the individual is bound to lose weight. Research that has been on since the 1970s have confirmed that lemon has the ability to destroy malignant cancer cells in cancers of the breast, colon, prostate, lung and pancreas. Lemon is said to be selective in its action against these cancer cells while sparing the normal cells of the body.
Most importantly, lemon is said to be 10,000 times more potent than most chemotherapeutic drugs in fighting against cancer and it is cheap. The most effective form of lemon drink for these two conditions and most of the others is a lemonade. This is simply produced by squeezing a lemon into a glass of water with a pinch of unrefined sea salt.
A cup of this lemonade before each meal of the day and one at bed time is all that you will need. As I close this write up, I will like you to note that most of the lemon remedies are usually in combination with things like honey, garlic, ginger etc. Drinking a lemonade daily or as often as possible, will surely do your health more good than certain others that you may be hooked to.
